SENSOR SIMULATION DEMO
MANTIS® supports simulation of sensors using two optional plugins, called viXsen and Quest2:
VIXSEN
viXsen is a plugin for MANTIS® that simulates sensors such as FLIR and NVG using real-time per pixel-based computations. Per pixel-based computations allow for more accurate temperature, lighting and atmospheric scattering computations, which results in realistic simulation of the real-world sensor display. viXsen is highly configurable by the user, allowing a wide range of sensor types to be emulated.
Key Features:
• Physics-based processing of material system in-band response values on a per-pixel basis
• Fully correlated with the MANTIS “out-the-window” view
• Can easily vary sensor and environmental parameters during run-time
• Real-time 3D atmospheric model using MODTRAN
• Per-pixel lighting
• Advanced thermal calculations using 1D heat transfer algorithm with multiple material layers, e.g. paint over asphalt over earth.
• Advanced support for the following NVG enhancements:
- Horizon glow tied to moon elevation and phase
- City glow displayed on the horizon caused by distant urban areas
- Light point halo model that considers atmospherics and light power level
- Moon display model
- Star field generated using catalog of 9000 real stars
- Support for special effects such as flame, explosion, air explosion, tracer, flash, rotor wash, and missile trail effects
- Detail texture support for terrains and models
- Cloud simulation correlated to OTW view

• Detail texture support for terrains and models
• Cloud simulation correlated to OTW view
QUEST2
Quest2 is a plugin for MANTIS® that provides support for post processing the rendered scene on sensor channels. Two modes of operation are supported depending on the type of sensor:
• For Monochrome TV and Electro-Optical (EO) sensor simulation Quest2 is typically used to post process an OTW visual scene.
• For sensors that operate deeper into the infra-red region of the electro-magnetic spectrum, Quest2 is used alongside the viXsen plug-in. The viXsen plug-in renders the scene as it appears at the aperture of the sensor. The Quest2 plug-in applies the effects introduced by the sensor itself—both those that are deliberate, like polarity control, and those that remain despite the designer’s best efforts, like noise.
The following post processing effects are supported by Quest2:
• Blur/sharpen
• Noise effects – temporal, static and scintillation
• Automatic Gain Control (AGC) – either 2-point; Histogram Equalization; or Local Area Contrast Enhancement (LACE)
• Hot/Cold spot tracking
• Manual gain and level
• Non-linear mapping
• Digital zoom/rotate/pan
• Output color and quantization, including white hot/ black hot.
• Multi-sensor composition and blending (e.g. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) such as a FLIR inset window within a full screen EO window)
UAV/UAS/DRONE SIMULATOR DEMO
Visitors can also experience Quantum3D’s eVTOL UAV/UAS simulator demo at the symposium. This simulator is based on a real ground control station (GCS) and can simulate a generic or specific UAV aerodynamic model integrated with sensors and camera systems. It is an affordable training solution tailored for aspiring drone/UAV pilots seeking Part 107 certification. With this simulator, trainees can develop their skills and gain practical experience in a safe and controlled environment. Designed for portability, the system can be carried by two people easily, and fits in the trunk of a regular car.
MANTIS® is available as a software application on Windows 10 or 11, and is included on Quantum3D’s Independence® IDX 9100, IDX 910 and IDX 91 turnkey Image Generators.
